Woodbine Ent. Ready to Build Mohawk Million Legacy

Woodbine Entertainment recently made it clear that Standardbred horse racing is ready for better days to come. Mohawk Million is about to have its second edition next year and two-year trotters will be welcome to participate in it for the generous big prize. Jim Lawson, Chief Executive Officer of Woodbine Entertainment, announced the good news for Ontario’s racing field.

This week saw the first-ever edition of the Mohawk Million live race introducing hefty prizes for the fastest racehorses. Mr. Lawson is among the supporters of change in the local horse racing field, introducing new offerings and riveting opportunities for growth. The inaugural edition of this race introduced a purse amounting to some CA$1.32 million.

2021 Mohawk Million

September 26 saw Venerate win the first edition of this race with owners Pinkse Stables and Andy Miller Stable. Julie Miller trained and prepared the trotter for the premium event. It could be recalled that earlier this month, Woodbine held its regular Stronger Together virtual meeting discussing topics related to horse racing in Ontario.

This latest conversation was focused on Woodbine Mohawk Park and everything new around it. Mr. Lawson confirmed his support but pointed out that a second edition of the racing bonanza might see some changes made to its structure, further improving it. Now it was set in stone that the year 2021 is going to see the second edition of Mohawk Millions and introduce something riveting to the events calendar.

Mr. Lawson pointed out that the first edition showed great results and the feedback was positive, so it only makes sense for the racing giant to set the pace for the upcoming years. The legacy for Mohawk Millions is worth building, as he put it himself this week. Projections are that it will have a positive impact on the Standardbred racing field on a provincial scale. What should be pointed out is that the horse racing event is once again going to feature the renowned buy-in formula widely implemented in the horse racing field.

What’s to Come

There are some improvements that will make next year’s action even better. There will be nine slots coming with this second edition of the Mohawk Million and they will all be available for purchase. The tenth one will be determined by the performance at the William Wellwood Memorial racing event. As for the slots ready to be purchased, they will see a drop in price.

Instead of seeking US$110,000, each of those will cost some CA$100,000 making it a more affordable event. The 2021 Mohawk Million is projected to bring purse amounting to some CA$1 million. For those interested in participating, February 15, 2021, is about to bring the last chance. A slot contract submission should come with some CA$50,000 to be introduced up until that point.

The remaining half of the overall price will have to be submitted by June 1, 2021. The particular date of this premium event is expected to be publicly revealed by the end of 2020, giving horse people enough time to prepare.
