Most Ontarians Bet on Canada to Advance in the World Cup

The majority of bettors on the sports betting platform, PROLINE, in Ontario, believed that Canada’s team would advance to the second stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This was recently reported by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which revealed that nearly 52% of the bettors placed their wagers in favour of the team winning against Australia.

OLG is a state-run Crown corporation offering legal gambling services to the province of Ontario. Via its PROLINE brand, the Crown agency offers sports betting in a safe and regulated manner. It is available across over 10,000 retailers in the province. Via PROLINE+, local sports fans can place their wagers online, allowing users to access it from the comfort of their homes.

Ontarians Believed in Their Team

On Monday, July 31, 2023, Canada’s team faced Australia, however, the Canucks were shockingly defeated by Australia 4-0, thus eliminating the team from the tournament. But according to the OLG, bettors on PROLINE fancied the team’s chances to advance and approximately 52% of the bets had Canada defeat Australia.

By breaking the data even further down, 29% of the bets were placed for the clash to end in a draw while 19% of the bets were on Australia to emerge victorious. Additionally, over 45% successfully predicted that the game will feature over/under 2.5 goals. The most popular score market was a goalless tie with 17% but 0.23% guessed the 4-0 loss correctly.

OLG shared that two PROLINE retail players correctly predicted Australia’s 4-0 thrashing of the Canucks with odds of 76.00. As expected, Canada’s three opening games at the World Cup were among the top six betting options for customers. The team’s draw with Nigeria was ranked first overall, and the 2-1 victory over Ireland was in third. While the Australia game was in sixth.

In the meantime, the United States who have set their eyes on a third straight World Cup have taken the most bets to win the tournament with 58% of the total volume. Canada was in second with 16% and England third with 6%. OLG also said a PROLINE bettor won CA$1,804 from a CA$12 wager on a 10-leg parlay on the MMA events from Saturday night.

More on PROLINE+

Shortly, after the introduction of single-event wagering across Canada in August 2021, OLG was one of the first platforms to offer the new betting option. For the occasion, OLG presented its brand-new at the time PROLINE+ which offers even great betting variety. Its player can place pre-match or live bets during a game from any sort of device that they have access to.

Fast-forwarding to the start of this year, OLG announced that its sports betting platform has now inked a multi-year contract extension with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment. Through the collaboration, PROLINE+ became the official sports betting partner of Real Sports. The collaboration started off with an exclusive fan experience at the venue.
