Canada Sees Gambling Expansion and Digitalization

It should be noted that the last few years have been quite crucial for the expansion of the Canadian gambling industry. In August 2021, the federal government enacted Bill C-218 as law, hence decriminalizing single-event wagering on sporting events. This was a highly-anticipated change for the industry as it provides greater variety for casual bettors.

Shortly after the legalization, provincial lotteries such as British Columbia Lottery Corporation, Loto-Quebec, and Atlantic Lottery Corporation all debuted the new offering for their bettors. The quick introduction was powered by Scientific Games’ OpenSports™ platform, making it the first regulated sportsbook solution in the country to offer single-event betting.

However, recently, experts have raised some concerns about the long-term impact related to single-game and in-play sports betting in the country. Matthew Young, the chief research officer for Greo Evidence Insights, noted that online gaming has expanded since the legalization of single-event wagers. He said that the gambling scenery changed drastically across the country and in Ontario, due to the launch of the private market.
