The San Antonio Spurs have won the Wembanyama sweepstakes and are set to be one of the most-watched teams in the 2023/24 season. Similar to 1997, the Spurs benefited from tanking a season — they won the Draft Lottery, selected a big man prospect, and are on the cusp of starting a new dynasty. If all the hype surrounding Victor Wembanyama proves true, the Spurs may very well be in championship contention in just a few years.

If you’re excited to watch the Spurs and their rising star take on the NBA and want to get some action on next season’s San Antonio games, you’re on the right page. We will present a list of safe and trusted Canadian online sportsbooks that feature the best San Antonio Spurs betting odds, show you how to join them, and explain some of the most popular NBA betting markets.

San Antonio Spurs Betting Odds — Types of Bets

You can bet on the San Antonio Spurs in various ways, from whether the team wins the game to how many points and rebounds Wembenyama gets. Top Canadian betting sites are full of exciting markets you can explore, and here are some of the most popular ones.

Moneyline

Will the San Antonio Spurs win or lose the game? This is all there is to the moneyline bet. You don’t have to worry about the winning margin, the number of points scored, or whether the game goes into overtime. Just guess which team wins correctly, and the money is yours.

Point Spread

This particular bet challenges you to guess whether the team will cover the spread by winning or losing by a given margin. If the Spurs are underdogs, they will have handicap points added to their total, like +8.5, for example. If you wanted to bet on the Spurs to cover the spread, they would have to lose by 8 points at most or win the game outright.

When San Antonio is favoured to win, you’ll see a negative number next to the team’s name in the point spread market, like -5.5. In this scenario, a winning bet on the Spurs requires the team to win by 6 or more points.

Totals (Over/Under)

The NBA has seen a huge influx in scoring in the last decade due to faster-paced offences and a better 3-point shot selection. This makes predicting the total number of points in an NBA game a rather exciting betting market.

The goal here is simple — the sportsbook will set a number, say 226.5, and you need to guess whether there will be 227 or more points (over) or 226 or fewer points (under). Aside from the main total, sportsbooks typically offer several alternative over/under lines, allowing you to choose the level of risk you’re comfortable with.

Futures

The main futures market in NBA betting is the outright winner (predicting the winner of the championship). The San Antonio Spurs are not quite the favourites yet, as their core is still young and inexperienced. Nevertheless, if you believe they’ll shock everyone and win the Larry O’Brien trophy in 2024, you could place a wager and enjoy some fairly long odds.

That said, there are plenty of other futures markets to explore. Namely, you can bet on whether the team reaches the playoffs or guess the over/under on their regular season win total. You can also predict the winners of individual awards, like betting on Victor Wembanyama to win Rookie of the Year.

Props

Proposition bets in NBA games typically fall into team and player props. You can bet on various in-game occurrences independent of the final score, like which team wins the coin toss or which team gets first to 20 points in a quarter.

With player props, the challenge is guessing the over/under on the main statistical categories of individual players, like the number of points Wembanyama scores or how many rebounds Jeremy Sochan grabs.

Live Betting

Live or in-game betting enables you to place bets while the Spurs game is in progress. Main markets like the moneyline, point spread, and totals remain open throughout the match, with odds and lines that reflect the current score and other relevant circumstances.

Live betting also offers the possibility of making short-term micro bets. For example, you can bet on the method of the next score (e.g. whether it will be a two-pointed, a three-pointer, or a free throw). You may also predict winners of individual quarters.

Parlay

A parlay is a multi-bet. If you wish to increase your potential winnings, you may add more selections to your slip. For instance, you can bet on the Spurs to win against the Rockets, for the Warriors to cover the spread versus the Lakers, and over on the Heat–Magic total points.

Online sportsbooks have recently introduced same-game parlays, allowing you to combine bets from the same fixture. While parlay does boost your potential profit, it’s also more challenging to win, as you can’t miss any of your selections.

Who Has the Best Odds on the San Antonio Spurs?

Aside from evaluating their bonuses, market depth, and payout times, we also rate Canadian online sportsbooks based on the quality of their odds. But despite the fact that all of our recommended betting sites have competitive odds, there will always be minor discrepancies in pricing between the platforms.

As an added convenience for you, we’ve created an NBA odds comparison page where you can quickly examine the prices between top books.

San Antonio Spurs History

The San Antonio Spurs crossed over from the ABA into the NBA in 1976. Spurred by the talents of George “Iceman” Gervin, the team made the playoffs in all of their first seven seasons but failed to reach the finals in any of those years. The mid to late 80s saw the Spurs alternate between winning and losing seasons, with, again, modest playoff success.

The tide would turn for the Texans in the 1987 draft with the selection of David Robinson as the number one overall pick. The “Admiral” steered San Antonio to seven more straight postseason appearances. Unfortunately, he couldn’t seem to lead them past the Western Conference, as the team found an insurmountable hurdle in opponents like the Blazers, Warriors, Suns, Rockets, or Jazz.

After tanking the 1996/97 season, the Spurs landed a number one pick once again, this time selecting Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest. This was also the season the Spurs hired Gregg Popovich as the head coach. It wouldn’t take long for Duncan to establish himself as one of the best big men in the league, and, led by the genius of Popovich, the team would finally win their first championship in 1999.

In the next few years, the Spurs drafted Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, a couple of internationals that would prove to be the core of their dynasty. The two young stars meshed well with Duncan and veteran Robinson and dominated their way to a 2003 championship. Robinson soon retired, but the Spurs continued to be the force in the West, winning two more titles in 2005 and 2007.

Despite the aging trio, the San Antonio Spurs continued being playoff regulars, posting consecutive 50- and 60-win seasons. In 2013, the team reached the finals for the first time in six years, and although being inches away from a title, lost in seven games to LeBron James and the Miami Heat. Many saw this as the last chance for Spurs to win another chip, but after an even better 2013/14 campaign, the team returned to the finals and got their revenge on Miami, beating them in five games. Young Kawhi Leonard was named the Finals MVP, and everyone thought the Spurs’ future was in good hands. However, Kawhi experienced an injury and distanced himself from the team, which would eventually force the Spurs to trade him to Toronto.

Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili retired one by one, and the Spurs couldn’t make the playoffs for the first time in 22 years after a shortened 2019/20 season. Consequently, this would result in a complete team rebuild and the Spurs missing the postseason for four straight years.

While history doesn’t repeat itself, it often rhymes, and this is very true in the case of the San Antonio Spurs. A few poor seasons have put the Spurs in a position to draft the first pick yet again, and it is now on Victor Wembanyama to be the new franchise leader.
