The New York Knicks are among the few NBA teams steeped in tradition. The Knicks have been in the NBA since its foundation and are one of only two teams that haven’t changed their home city or name since the beginning.

In their 70+ season history, they’ve won their division eight times, got the conference title four times, reached the NBA Finals eight times, and won two championship titles.

Unfortunately, a long history and great numbers throughout don’t necessarily translate to success in the modern NBA era. The last time they won a conference title was in 1999, which was also the last time they were in the Finals. Both Championship titles came about in the early 70s, while the last time they won their division was in 2013.

Some fans don’t like to admit it, but the Knicks are far from their glory days in the 70s. They are also long past the great Patrick Ewing era when they had the longest playoff streak in their history — 14 seasons. The brief few years when Carmelo Anthony arrived in the early 2010s were an exception, but the Knicks have had various struggles for more than 20 years.

Fortunately for all fans, they have had somewhat of a resurgence in the last few years, ever since Tom “Thibs” Thibodeau started coaching them. With that in mind, this is likely the right time to start betting on them in any major Canadian sportsbook.

New York Knicks Betting Odds — Types of Bets

You are free to place a bet on the Knicks in almost any Canadian sportsbook. Most feature an extensive collection of wagers on any upcoming or ongoing Knicks game.

You’ll get to predict things like the winner of the game or the total number of points being over or under a particular number, but you’ll also see more niche and specific bets like teasers and countless props.

Let’s take a closer look at the most popular types of bets you’ll get to place so you know what to expect.

Moneyline

The moneyline is the basic wager in all sports, allowing you to predict the winning team in a game. For instance, in a game between the Knicks and the Nets, you’ll see the odds listed as negative for one team and positive for the other. A negative moneyline denotes the favourite, whereas a positive one indicates the underdog.

Let’s say the Knicks are the favourites, and the odds on them are -140. This means that if you invest $100 in their victory and they manage to win, you’ll get a payout of $171.43, which includes the $71.43 profit and the $100 stake. On the other hand, the moneyline on the Nets is +150, meaning they are the underdogs, and a $100 wager on them will have a $250 payout.

Point Spread

Point spreads allow you to bet on the winner and the margin of victory. In other words, the bet evens out the playing field between a favourite and an underdog by placing a margin in terms of points.

For example, let’s say the Knicks are the underdogs in a game against the Celtics. The sportsbook can place a +4.5 spread on the Knicks, meaning they could lose by up to 4 points, and a wager on them would still win. Conversely, the Celtics would have a -4.5 spread, meaning that they’d have to effectively cover the margin with at least 5 points against the Knicks for you to win the bet.

Totals

Totals, or over/under bets, are pretty popular with NBA bettors, and they allow you to wager on the combined score of two teams in a game. You’re not required to predict the exact score but rather whether the score will be over or under a predetermined number. Most sportsbooks give a few dozen totals on any game, covering various possible combined scores.

For example, the tally could be 204.5. If you want to bet under, the total score needs to be 204 or less for you to win, and if you bet over, it would need to be 205 or more.

Bear in mind that this wager is often pure guesswork if you go for the options with the most favourable odds, as the chances are almost identical for both “over” and “under” choices.

Futures

Futures allow the bettor to go for long-term engagements by letting them predict the results of the NBA Finals, for example. Naturally, futures can cover any future player or team accomplishment, like the Knicks clinching a playoff spot or Thibs getting another Coach of the Year award.

Prop Bets

Props or proposition bets involve predictions that have no bearing on the outcome of a game but are usually about a player’s or team’s performance. For example, you could bet on Randle scoring more than 30 points, Mitchell Robinson having more than 12 rebounds, or maybe even something random like whether the first basket will be a three-pointer, a free throw, or a dunk.

Live Betting

Live betting is a type of sports betting that allows you to place wagers while a game is ongoing. It offers a wide range of bets, including those covered here, and you get to place them while a Knicks game is on.

In-play betting adds more excitement to regular sports betting, as you get to watch the game and make predictions at the same time. Many quality sportsbooks will allow you to watch the game directly on their site.

Parlay

Parlays are just two or more single bets placed on one betting slip. The exciting part is that the odds are multiplied, but you must get every prediction right to win the whole parlay.

For example, if you were to place a $100 parlay with -200, -125, and +110 odds, the parlay odds would be +467 and the payout $567. This outcome is more lucrative because the payout is $467, while the total payout on these three wagers if you were to place them as singles, would be only $240.

Who Has the Best Odds on the New York Knicks

Unfortunately, no one can have the best odds on an entire team for the simple reason that the odds vary from sportsbook to sportsbook for every wager. For example, the moneyline odds on a Knicks game could be +210 on one site and +205 on another. The difference is usually small but adds up over dozens of wagers.

The goal is to compare the odds on various sites for every wager you want to make and choose the one with the most favourable numbers. This can be time-consuming, so using odds comparison pages like ours is more efficient. We list the odds from several major sportsbooks for various bets, eliminating the need to visit each sports betting site individually.

New York Knicks History

The New York Knickerbockers began their long tenure in the NBA in 1946, the same year the league was created. They were one of only 11 original NBA teams. Most of these teams folded in the next few years, while one changed its name and home city. Only the Knicks and the Celtics remain intact to this very day.

The format of the league and the teams have changed many times since. Currently, the Knicks play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

They were a largely successful team in the league’s early years, reaching the playoffs every time from 1946 to 1956. They were often in the semis, division finals, and even the NBA Championship Series. The first time they reached the league Finals was as early as 1951. They followed that up with two more consecutive Finals appearances.

However, the first NBA Champion title came much later, in 1970, after a staggering 60–22 record, their best by that point. This was when the Knicks were led by the legendary Willis Reed and Walt “Clyde” Frazier while under the watchful eye of Red Holzman, one of the top ten coaches in NBA history.

They followed that up with two impressive seasons, losing in the Conference Finals in 1971 and the NBA Finals in 1972. Then, in 1973, they won the Champion title for the second and, unfortunately, last time. Interestingly, they played against the Los Angeles Lakers in all three NBA Championship Series.

This was followed by a decade of mixed results. Sometimes they had a losing record; other times, they went as far as the Conference Semifinals, and in a few instances, they were among the worst-ranked teams in the season.

Things began to change in 1985 when they drafted Patrick Ewing, who defined the next 15 years for the team. He received the Rookie of the Year award in his first season with the Knicks, and in 1989, he led them to their first Division title since 1971.

In 1993, with the help of a new coach, Pat Riley, the Knicks reached the Conference Finals. The year after, they won the title and lost to the Houston Rockets in the NBA Championship Series after seven games.

Their playoff streak continued after that, with the team reaching at least the semis almost every year until the turn of the millennium. They also made it to the Finals in 1999, which marked the last time the world saw the Knicks getting so close to the NBA title.

Unfortunately, the new century brought about the worst performance in the team’s history. It was as if the dot-com crash affected the stock market, the world of business, and then the Knicks. They changed coaches almost every year, and just when all hope was lost, they completely redesigned their roster, adding Carmelo Anthony to the team in 2010, and their fortunes began changing.

The Knicks reached the playoffs thrice in a row, culminating with a division win and a Conference Semis appearance in 2013. Unfortunately, this was just a flash in the pan, as things fell apart afterward.

The stars started smiling at them again years later, beginning in 2020 with the arrival of Tom Thibodeau, who immediately got the Coach of the Year award. The 2022–23 season was their best since 2013, ending with a Conference Semis loss to the Miami Heat 4–2 and a 47–35 record.
