NY Casino Staff Rally, Gov Prepares for Casinos Relaunch

New York State casino workers are seeking ways in which they could trigger the change they have been looking for over the past few months. A total of five simultaneous rallies were held across the state, seeking the support of the government and the eventual reopening of the commercial casinos and racinos on a state scale. The Governor might give his nod soon.

The state has had its brick-and-mortar casino locations closed ever since mid-March and for months, the people working there day in, day out have remained home anticipating their official return. More than five months later, such a reopening has not come and Gov. Andrew Cuomo made it clear earlier this summer that he does not consider it necessary for the time being.

Five Rallies

This Thursday was an important day for the casino workers across New York State, as they took to the streets in order to seek their rights. They want to see commercial casinos receive permission to operate on a daily basis with all safety protocols in place. For the time being, the government has not issued a timeline regarding the safe reopening of commercial casinos and racinos within the state.

The rallies commenced at 12 p.m. and covered all five locations associated with gambling. About 5,200 casino workers are directly affected by the lack of work over the past more than 5 months and they want this lockdown situation to be over. People are worried that once the six-month mark has been reached, their employment would be terminated. They are currently laid off and looking forward to more information.

The five simultaneous rallies were all taking into account the physical distancing recommendations and all individuals had to wear face masks at all times. All health guidelines had to be implemented in order for the rallies to take place. Thousands of individuals made their way to the streets seeking answers.

Gov. Evaluates Situation

The protest in front of Rivers Casino took place under the pouring rain but individuals were ready to face all weather conditions and this did not discourage them. The casino staff members took care of the entire organization of the five rallies in front of del Lago Resort and Casino, Resorts World Catskills, Rivers Casino & Resort, Tioga Downs & Casino, as well as Vernon Downs & Casino.

Rivers Casino recently pointed out that the casino is ready to relaunch operation as soon as it receives the green light for its reopening, as all safety protocols have already been implemented. In the meantime, Gov. Cuomo might be looking into the casino reopening subject. August 27 witnessed his statement that he is reviewing commercial casinos reopening among other businesses.

Gov. Cuomo pointed out that casino venues, movie theaters, along with restaurants could be among the next businesses to relaunch in-person daily operation. The upcoming weeks are expected to see a positive change for the casino workers seeking ways in which their employment would not be terminated.
