Unifor National Takes to the Streets after Gateway Casinos Staff Cutoffs

Unifor National is ready to take matters to the streets now more than ever, as it aims to prove a point with its new campaign. Casino Rama workers protected by the labor union were part of the staff reduction launched by the casino operator and now the union launched the #NoJobsNoDice protest campaign that aims to raise awareness of this issue. August 8 is going to see the special congregation of supporters at Tudhope Park in Orillia.

Fair work conditions are crucial for every employee and are a strong foundation for a lasting relationship. Labor unions have the task to play the part of mediators in the conversation between the employees and their employer. In this particular situation, this includes Gateway Casinos & Entertainment, one of the leading Canadian casino operators. Exactly a year after it took over control of the casino venue available on site of Casino Rama Resort, changes were made.

Casino Rama Workers Layoffs

Some 65 full-time and 5 part-time unionized employees of the casino venue learned that they are part of the layoff process that aims to optimize spending. However, locals have expressed their discontent with the staff reduction, citing the years of experience many of the employees have accumulated ever since the launch of operation.

Earlier this week the union hinted on his plans for action, but now they have been officially announced. August 8 is about to bring an organized rally in solidarity with the individuals that had to bid farewell to their career at Casino Rama. Next Thursday is about to give a green light of the protest that aims to prove a point. Unifor National President Jerry Dias is also going to be part of the event.

The job cuts were announced only days ahead of the deadline of job cuts and people has a limited amount of time to approach the situation. Apart from the 70 unionized individuals, the following week saw more employees’ cutoffs. This time Gateway Casinos focused on the people that have not been unionized and their actual number remained undisclosed.

August 6 Brings Special Meeting

In order to guarantee enough time for the protest, action is about to commence at 11 a.m. and continue all the way to 1 p.m. Everyone interested in supporting their community members has the opportunity to do so. In addition to the August 8 action, August 6 is also projected to see a conversation in relation to the Casino Rama employees.

Unifor National is preparing for its official meeting with Gateway Casinos officials for a frank conversation on staff reduction and seeking a mutually beneficial approach. As the union has argued previously, the remaining unionized workers on site deserve fair conditions and no further staff cuts.

Gateway Casinos works on several major projects across Ontario and in order to make the best of the situation, it would have to change the direction of spending. Some of the projects in need of more attention are Starlight Casino London, Cascades Casino North Bay. Kenora is also preparing for an entirely new casino that would bear the brand Playtime and cost about CA$21 million.
