NYRA Welcomes Newest Board of Directors Member

This week, the New York Racing Association or NYRA welcomed its newest Board member addition, and his name is Jerry Zaro. On February 23, 2022, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the active breeder and Thoroughbred owner will be joining the association’s Board of Directors, thus replacing Michael Del Giudice who recently retired.

Mr. Zaro is a prominent name in the Empire State’s horse racing industry as he is an active breeder of horses, as well as an owner of Thoroughbreds. Among his champions are the New York-bred three-time stakes winner Blindwillie McTell, and grade 1-paced Baby Yoda, who has got the record for the fastest Beyer Speed Figure of 114 at the association’s tracks in 2021.

Welcome Aboard

In her statement, Gov. Hochul commented that for generations New Yorkers have enjoyed world-class Thoroughbred racing at Saratoga Race Course and Belmont Park, where they connected with their close ones. She also said that the industry is responsible for many good jobs and billions of revenue, as she welcomed Mr. Zaro as a member of NYRA’s Board of Directors.

Mr. Zaro, who is a resident of Harrison, N.Y, is the current Chair of the Banking and Real Estate Services Department at Sills Cummis & Gross thanked the Governor for his appointment. He also noted that horse racing is an engine of economic growth in the Empire State and that he is pleased to be joining the distinguished NYRA Board of Directors, and contributing with all he has to the industry.

The newest member has also commented that the racing association is the premier racing circuit in the country since the board and management team have embraced changes and prioritized integrity and safety. He is also quite optimistic about the future of the industry in the state, and he is looking forward to seeing what it has in store.

In addition to the appointment of Mr. Zaro, the association has also revealed that Joseph Spinelli will leave its Board of Directors. The new addition will be now replacing Michael Del Giudice, who recently announced his retirement. Mr. Zaro will take over his new position effective immediately, and he will be able to contribute with the help of his rich experience from several sectors.

Two Bonuses Make Their Comeback

More news came from NYRA this week, as the organization announced the return of “New York Stakes Turf Bonus” and “Flower Bowl Bonus” for its Turf Triple series this year. The idea behind those two bonuses is to incentivize past filly Turf series winners who will return in a more competitive older filly and mare division this summer at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

Caesars Sportsbook Collab

Last month, the association has also inked a lucrative agreement with Caesars Entertainment Inc. for its Turf Triple Series. The gaming giant’s Caesars Sportsbook has now become the official sports betting partner and sponsor of the prestigious competition. The sportsbook will also partner with NYRA Bet and allow its players access to promotions and deal online, as well as in-person at the two tracks. Customers will have gain access to the company’s premium loyalty program – Caesars Rewards
