The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in less than three days, and Canadian sports bettors are quite excited about it. For the first time in over 36 years, the Canadian National team will participate in it, and British Columbia bettors are backing the team to get past the group stages as they place their wagers on British Columbia Lottery Corporation’s PlayNow platform.
It should be noted that PlayNow.com is the only regulated online gambling in the Province of B.C. and its revenue is reinvested back into the local coffers. It supports healthcare, education, and community programs. Unlike offshore betting sites, PlayNow prioritizes player health and offers numerous tools and protections to guild players toward healthy and responsible play.
First Tournament in 36 Years
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to be the first one for the Canadian National team in over 36 years. However, not many countries are betting big on Canada to come out of the group stage and it is considered a massive underdog. But still, British Columbians are quite optimistic and are betting that their team will be able to take on the challenge and come out of the group.
Currently, Canada is ranked team number 41st in the world, and the team is scheduled to kick off its tournament in Group F against the exciting team of Belgium. The latter is currently second in FIFA’s rankings. As of now, 99% of wagers on PlayNow are that Canada will advance from the group stage for the first time ever and play the knockouts.
Additionally, 82% of the bets are on the team to win Group F outright despite strong competition from Belgium, Morocco, and the runner-ups from the last World Cup – Croatia. Even more surprisingly 33% of the bets are that Canada will win the tournament. Meanwhile, bettors also favour Argentina with 6% of bets, and France with 5% of the total wagers.
BCLC also shared odds from its platform. Currently, Canada is 13.00 to win its Group F, 201.00 to win the tournament, 3.75 to advance from the groups, and 1.80 to score more than 2.5 goals. Players are also placing their wagers for the two finalists with Brazil vs. Argentina being the crowd’s first choice with 18% of the bets and 19.00 odds.
With the start of this year’s NHL season, the BCLC also released its odds, favouring the local Vancouver Canucks to make the postseason playoffs. On PlayNow, the team has 1.76 odds of making the postseason, in comparison to missing the playoffs at 2.05. Their benchmark for regular season points for this season is 93.5, a number the club has now surpassed since 2015.
In September, the Crown corporation released its official financial and highlights report from its 2021/2022 fiscal year. It disclosed revenue of CA$2.362 billion and a net income of CA$$1.314 billion. Since 1985, through its gaming operations, the Crown agency has secured more than CA$26 billion which has been used to support healthcare, education, community groups and more.
